Slide 1 - What can we do for you?
Hello, my name is Matthew Theron and I am representing MDTFilms. I’m here to explain what my company can do for you.
Slide 2 - Who have we worked with?
Firstly, allow me to begin by informing you of our experience in this business. As you can see, we have worked with a wide range of artists and bands with varying styles. We will use our past experience to ensure an appropriate and entertaining music video is produced for you at the highest quality one could offer.
Slide 3 - History of the music video
Around the mid 1940s, Walt Disney's 'Fantasia' was released; this was an animated video which was played in sync with classical music, this was done to illustrate the visual reciprocation of the music.
But where did it all begin? The first music video was recorded in 1956, the video was of Tony Bennett walking in Hyde Park, London. This video was aired on shows in the UK and US.
10 years later, The Beatles released and starred in their first feature film called ‘A Hard Day’s Night’. It was filmed in black and white and featured a comedic undertone; their second feature called 'Help!' was filmed in colour, in London.
In 1965 the Beatles began making promotional clips which were distributed in other countries, broadening their audience without them having to make in-person appearances.
A music video which aided massively in the creation of the music videos we see on social media now was Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody, which was released in 1975.
Now that you know a little more about the history behind the music video, allow me to explain the benefits of making one.
Slide 4 - Quote
As Walter Scott, said: “For success, attitude is equally as important as ability.” We at MDTFilms have taken this to heart and ensure a positive attitude from our entire staff towards your ideas and concepts you wish to see within your music video.
Slide 5 - Why make a music video?
Music videos can emphasize are further develop meaning behind the music, this can be extremely appealing for an artist who doesn’t believe the lyrics alone will convey the intended concept to their audience.
Music videos are also extremely effective at gaining exposure for the artist and their music, therefore resulting in a larger audience and demand. For example, if the music video is abnormally good, there is a higher chance of people sharing it with friends, family and the public in general; a music video can also be far more memorable than just music which would therefore aid massively in exposure for the band or artist.
Another reason for making a music video is to stand out among other musical groups. This is because not every band are making music videos for their music which would put you in the minority, therefore increasing the potential audience further.
Slide 6 - Demographic
Knowing your audience is extremely useful for maximising the viewership of a music video. Certain aspects of a music video can be altered slightly so it appeals more towards a certain demographic, a few examples are: costumes, lyrics, tempo of beat.
Slide 7 - Distribution
Distribution is extremely important in the success of a music video; a perfect example of this is MTV. In 1981 they launched and aired ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’. The song and music video was a massive success, it topped sixteen international music charts which increased the bands audience massively.
Before the internet was as accessible as it is now to the modern public, the distribution of music was far more straightforward and general. Popular music at the time was played on television channels such as MTV, this meant the audience had no control over what they were shown. There was also the option to purchase physical recordings, such as vinyl records and CD’s, however these may have been expensive for some and not worth investing in. This resulted in companies like MTV having a large amount of control over what music gets viewed by the mass modern population.
Nowadays, in the late 2010s, there are a wide variety of distribution techniques tailored towards a certain audience. With our acquired experience and specially trained employees, we would take care of the distribution in a multitude of ways: for example creating a YouTube channel for the band or artist, where we would post the music videos for their audience. This has been proven time and time again to aid in sales and exposure tremendously; an example being PSY’s ‘Gangnam Style’ which as of September 2018 has 3,215,230,350 views on YouTube alone. This would be done among other platforms of media, such as Radio stations, Twitter, Facebook and many more.
We are aware and well informed with the techniques used by websites such as these to help their users find videos they are interested in. There are algorithms put in place to ensure viewers are suggested videos by similar creators to those they already enjoy. As you can see, today’s market is far more difficult to navigate. With the advent of online media, multi modality and other forms of online usage, the consumption of the music video has drastically changed. We address this challenge and use it to our advantage with the ultimate goal of gaining mass amounts of exposure and viewership from a variety of audiences.
Slide 8 - Snowball Effect
We plan on taking advantage of something called The Snowball Effect to increase viewership for the music video. The Snowball Effect can be explained with the use of a snowball: imagine you push a small snowball down a snowy hill, as the snowball rolls down said hill its size and speed will increase.
We incorporate this idea into the distribution of your music video, basically the idea is that one person is discovers and enjoys the music video, that person will then show their friends who will in turn each show their friends. This results in a rapid growth of viewership and exposure.
Slide 9 - Branding
We understand the importance of branding, for example, it is far easier to remember a logo as opposed to a company name. With the use of branding, we can maximise the sales of the music video, therefore gaining viewership and a larger audience.
Slide 10 - Synergy
Synergy music videos are where two or more forms of media collaborate to make a promotional video, promoting both aspects of the combined party. This makes this type of music video extremely effective at increasing the viewership among both parties.
Slide 11 - Types of music videos
Aside from synergy, there are 3 other types of music videos: narrative, concept and performance.
A narrative music video features a story line which is easy to follow and directly relates to the lyrics and genre of the song. Typically, the lyrics will be reflected in the music video, this creates a connection with the audio and visuals of the video. The simple plot which narratives usually have allow for the audience to engage and understand the music video meaning more easily. An advantage of narrative music videos is it allows the artist to portray their priority of the music over fame and being seen by the audience.
Concept music videos are usually based around a social or political issue, however this issue is left vague which allows the audience to create their own interpretation of the music video. These music videos largely consist of symbolism and images which support the lyrics.
A performance music video is where a band/artist perform throughout the entire video. An advantage of this type of music video is the cost; due to the lack/minimal number of actors, the production of the music video is cheaper. Another advantage of performance music videos is the choice to film the music video live or within a studio.
That concludes the presentation, thank you for your time.
